It is much easier for a retail brand such as Ford or GM to gain fans or followers as individuals are just that, fans of the product produced. A retail business is really using Social Media for connecting and communicating to existing clientele and cultivating the customer of tomorrow. The goal is obviously to have your “dealership ambassadors” spread the good word about your business through their Social Networks. If that is the goal, what are you doing to help yourself infiltrate that network? Posting about the latest new car? Hmmm, if they’re interested, they’ve probably already picked up the information from the same place you got it, the manufacturer’s feed. Posting about your service specials…hmmm…they may not own one of your products so that’s not that interesting. Not enough followers ask yourself do you have an existing online profile somewhere ? If it’s a blog or web site, do you mention that you’re using Twitter in posts with links from your profile and contact pages. If you’re on Facebook use one of the numerous tools available to drag in your Tweets to Facebook. Add your twitter address for example @timothycoreilly to your email signature, business card, mention it in interviews or customer testimonials that you might use.

The more active you are on Twitter the more likely you are to have someone find you from within Twitter and add you as someone who they are following. That being said do not Tweet too frequently about nothing worthwhile because you run the risk of losing followers. Make sure to tweet during peak times Tweeting during these times only increases the chances of someone finding you. Provide value in Tweets to capture followers, if you help enhance people’s lives in some way they are more likely to want to follow you and read more of what you have to say.
